Pickens Ribbon Cutting 5.2.2023

Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) invites all members of the community to join them at 100 Library Lane as they celebrate the official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the Pickens County Library on May 11 at 4 PM, hosted by the Pickens Chamber of Commerce.

“We are looking forward to the ribbon cutting, not just as a celebration for the opening but an opportunity to say thank you,” says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “We were able to renovate and expand our library because of community support, but also because of the support of our local and state leaders. The project was funded by SPLOST and two state grants. The ribbon cutting is a celebration of all the things that made the project possible.”

The Pickens County Library relocated to a temporary space in May 2021 while the primary space underwent construction. Partial funding of $1,800,000 for this project was made possible by the Pickens County’s SPLOST program. To fund the remaining portion, the Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) applied and received from the State a $2,000,000 Capital Outlay Grant, administered by the Georgia Public Library Service. The project received a second Capital Outlay Grant for FY24, for the amount of $175,000. These grants are funded by the sale of bonds and must be approved by the state legislature.

The finished renovation includes the addition of 8,200 square feet to the building. With an expanded and renovated library facility, the Pickens community will have more space for books and technology; larger areas for programs, meetings, collaboration, and creation; and additional seating for study and quiet reading.

“We have already hosted storytimes, lifelong learning programs and impromptu tours,” Cortellino says. “It has been an exciting time as we reintroduce the community to the new library, which everyone seems to really love. If you haven’t stopped by to take a look, please do.”

Pickens Grab & Go Last Day of Operation 2.22.2023

Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) has announced that the last day of operation for the Pickens Grab  & Go, located inside the Mountain Education Charter High School, will be Thursday, March 2nd, 2023. The  closure of the Pickens Grab & Go will allow SRLS staff to move all services to the newly renovated and  expanded Pickens County Library building, located at 100 Library Lane. The Pickens County Library building is  projected to open to the public in late March.

No items checked out from the Pickens Grab & Go will be due between the time of its closure and the opening  of the Pickens County Library building. Patrons can return any items checked out from the Pickens Grab & Go  to other SRLS locations during this time. Community members can still access programs and services by  visiting any of the neighboring libraries in Cherokee and Gilmer counties.

Before its closure on March 2nd, 2023, the Pickens Grab & Go will have limited operations and adjusted hours  as staff begin to pack up materials.

Pickens County Library Delay Lift 1.26.23

Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) has announced that the Pickens County Library, which has undergone renovation and expansion since summer of 2021, is on track to reopen to the public in the spring of 2023. While the project experienced a brief delay due to issues relating to the supply chain and lead times, the Pickens County Library will welcome members of the community to its newly renovated building located at 100 Library Lane this spring.

“We have had a few bumps during this process, the majority of which have been supply chain issues,” says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “I am excited to share that the project is back on track, and we are hopeful to reopen to the public in late April or May. The majority of remaining work is all internal. It is work that could not be completed until our space was conditioned. It is our goal to open the doors as quickly as possible, but we certainly want to ensure that when we do open the doors, the building is fully ready for community use. We are excited to move through these final months efficiently with Hogan Construction.”

Pickens Project Update 10.17.22

Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) has announced that the Pickens County Library, which has undergone renovation and expansion since summer of 2021, is projected to reopen to the public in 2023. Although a projected December 2022 reopening of the building was previously announced in September, supply chain issues and lead times have caused a delay in the construction project’s original completion window. Operation of the temporary Pickens Grab & Go library location at West Church Street, as well as the Pickens County Library’s fall/winter event calendar and programming schedule, will continue unaffected by this delay.

“We share our community’s anticipation and excitement for the reopening of the new and improved Pickens County Library building”, says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “We are sorry to announce a slight delay to 2023 for the completed renovation and expansion of our Pickens County Library. To ensure the new building can deliver the optimal library experience for the entire Pickens County community, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on the completion of this project”.

During construction, Pickens County Library will continue to offer programming at Pickens County Recreation Department and other off-site locations this fall and winter. Upcoming events include weekly storytimes, a celebration of Native American heritage with Funk Heritage Center, monthly book club gatherings at Pendley Creek Brewing Company, and the annual Polar Express celebration featuring Santa Claus at Chattahoochee Tech this holiday season. Regular service hours and programming schedules at other SRLS locations in Cherokee and Gilmer Counties will not be affected by the Pickens County Library construction delay.
